North Sea Coastal Bathing Resort Hooksiel

The old historical village centre in Hooksiel with its harbour listed as a historical monument, the packing houses and the former town hall with its striking onion dome - in use today as an artists' commune, recalls the days when Hooksiel used to be an important transshipment port for the town of Jever. In the course of Germany's greatest land reclamation scheme, a 240 ha. leisure park was created just east of Hooksiel with foot, cycle and bridle paths, a trotting race track, tennis courts etc. as well as a 60 ha. lake, the so-called Hooksmeer; linking the old harbour with a new outer harbour. In the Hooksmeer, along with several pleasure craft harbours, are a sailing school with a peddle-boat hire, a surfing bay with a surfing school and a water-ski tractor facility. This makes Hooksiel, of course, particularly popular with those involved with water sport. On the other side of the then newly completed dyke lies a fine sandy beach 4 kilometres in length and a huge camp site. Both amenities include areas designated for nudists. The range of facilities on offer is rounded off by a seawater indoor swimming baths and a new Visitors' and Children's Play-House.
